Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN)

Australian Maritime and Fisheries Academy are committed to ensuring that every student is well prepared and supported throughout the educational journey. An important part of this commitment is our Upfront Assessment of Needs (UAN) process, designed to identify the most suitable learning pathways and support mechanisms for each individual.

What is a UAN

The UAN is a comprehensive evaluation conducted prior to enrollment in any subsidised training program. Its primary objective is to:

• Assess Suitability: Determine the alignment between the student’s career aspirations and the chosen qualification
• Identify Support Needs: Recognise any personal, educational, or logistical challenges that may impact learning, allowing us to tailor support services accordingly.
• Evaluate Literacy and Numeracy Skills: Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) assessment, we gauge foundational skills essential for successful course completion.

How AMFA assesses suitability

• AMFA conducts a comprehensive evaluation through the UAN process prior to enrollment in any subsidised training program. This assessment aims to determine the alignment between the student’s career aspirations and the chosen qualification. By understanding each individual’s goals, AMFA ensures that students are enrolled in courses that best fit their intended career paths.
• Within the UAN, AMFA identifies any personal, educational, or logistical challenges that may impact a student’s learning. This proactive approach allows the Academy to tailor support services accordingly, ensuring that students receive the necessary assistance to overcome potential barriers and achieve successful training outcomes.
• As part of the UAN, students undergo a Language, Literacy, and Numeracy (LLN) assessment. This evaluation helps AMFA understand the student’s current capabilities in reading, writing, and numeracy. The insights gained enable the provision of targeted support and resources, ensuring students have the necessary tools to thrive in their studies.
