Course Overview
This qualification is offered by AMFA to people who are employed or seeking employment in the seafood or maritime industries to act on a commercial marine vessel:
- Up to 45 metres in length within the exclusive economic zone (EEZ) as a Master and up to 80 metres in length as a Mate.
This qualification is part of the regulatory requirements to obtain a Master <35m NC Certificate of Competency (CoC). For other regulatory requirements relating to the Master <35m NC CoC, please visit the AMSA website.

Completion:
Upon successful completion of this qualification, you will receive a MAR40320 Certificate IV in Maritime Operations (Master up to 45 metres Near Coastal) and a Statement of Attainment listing the appropriate units of competency from AMFA.
Understanding Master up to 45 metres Near Coastal
This comprehensive maritime training program encompasses a wide array of essential skills and knowledge for individuals aspiring to excel in the seafood and maritime industry. Participants will learn how to provide vital first aid, manage the loading, discharging, and stowage of cargo, ensure vessel stability, slip and dock vessels up to 80 meters, and plan and supervise routine maintenance.
The course also covers the effective operation of propulsion units, monitoring and managing vessel operations, handling deck machinery and steering gear on vessels up to 80 meters, and essential survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment. In addition, participants will be trained in minimising and fighting fires, meeting stringent work health and safety requirements, and surviving at sea using survival craft.
The program also includes specialised training in confined space entry, small crew management, navigational watchkeeping, passage planning, using wheelhouse equipment for safe navigation, and forecasting weather and oceanographic conditions. Ensuring compliance with regulations for safe vessel operation and monitoring environmental management are integral components of this comprehensive training.
Graduates will be well-prepared to maneuver vessels up to 80 meters and oversee the seaworthiness of such vessels, making them valuable assets in the maritime industry.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for a Master less than 45 metres near coastal certificate you must:
- Be at least 16 years old on the certificate issue date.
- Be able to speak and understand English, including written documents
- Hold either a Master less than 24 metres near coastal certificate
- Be medically fit for the duties, including eyesight
- Gain any needed sea service
Complete training - Pass a final assessment.
